On a journey from the vibrant city of Marrakech to the serene dunes of Erg Lihoudi offers an unparalleled adventure into Morocco’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural tapestry(Marrakech Desert Expedition).
We commence our expedition early in the morning, departing from Marrakech and heading southeast towards the High Atlas Mountains.
The journey begins with an ascent through the winding roads of the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa, standing at an elevation of 2,260 meters.
Our first significant stop is at the historic Kasbah Telouet. Once the palatial residence of the influential Glaoui family, this kasbah stands as a testament to Morocco’s intricate history.
Continuing our journey, we arrive at site of Aït Ben Haddou. This iconic ksar, a fortified village, has served as the backdrop for numerous films and television series due to its striking architecture and picturesque setting.
After a leisurely exploration and lunch, we proceed through the Anti-Atlas Mountains, descending into the expansive Drâa Valley.
Known as the longest river valley in Morocco, the Drâa is adorned with a vast palm grove, ancient kasbahs. Our day concludes in the tranquil town of Agdz, where we settle into a charming riad nestled amidst the palm trees.
We continue our descent along the Drâa Valley.
The road meanders through a tapestry of lush palm groves, fortified villages, and verdant fields, offering insights into the traditional lifestyles that have thrived here for centuries.
Our route brings us to Zagora. Here, we pause for lunch and have the opportunity to visit local artisans renowned for their intricate silver jewelry and crafts, providing a window into the region’s rich artistic heritage.
A short drive south leads us to the village of Tamgroute, famed for its distinctive green-glazed pottery. y.
In the late afternoon, we reach the serene dunes of Erg Lihoudi.
Unlike the more frequented dunes of Erg Chebbi, Erg Lihoudi offers a tranquil desert experience, characterized by its undulating sands and sparse tamarisk trees.
Here, we embark on a camel trek, riding into the heart of the dunes as the sun sets.
As night falls, we arrive at our traditional nomadic camp. After a delectable dinner featuring local delicacies, we gather around a campfire under the starlit sky, where local musicians share the soulful rhythms of Saharan music.
We begin the day early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes, a moment of serene beauty as the first light of dawn illuminates the endless sands.
After breakfast, we commence our return journey. Retracing our path through the Drâa Valley, we make a stop at the Kasbah of Tamnougalt.
Continuing north, we arrive in Ouarzazate, often dubbed the “Hollywood of Africa” due to its prominent film studios. Here, we pause for lunch and have the option to visit the Atlas Film Studios or the impressive Taourirt Kasbah, a labyrinthine structure that once served as a residence for the Glaoui dynasty.
The final leg of our journey takes us back through the High Atlas Mountains.
We conclude our expedition with an evening arrival in Marrakech, where the vibrant energy of the city awaits, contrasting with the serene desert landscapes we’ve explored over the past three days.
