The Atlas and the Kasbah Route

What are Kasbahs?

Kasbahs are castles built primarily from brick and clay, with thick walls and defensive towers. They are designed to withstand the harsh desert climate and provide shelter in times of conflict. Their architectural style is a mix of Berber, Arab and, to a lesser extent, Andalusian influences.

The Kasbah Route

The Via Kasbah is a path that follows the course of the Draa River, from Ouarzazate to Zagora, passing by some of the most impressive castles in Morocco. Although most of the kasbahs are in ruins or partially restored, their architectural beauty still attracts thousands of travelers.

Key Cities on the Kasbah Route

Ouarzazate: The Gateway to the Desert

Ouarzazate is the starting point of the Kasbah Route. This city, known as the “Gateway to the Desert”, has been the setting for numerous film productions, from “Gladiator” to “Game of Thrones”.

The main kasbah, Taourirt, is one of the best preserved and a testament to the power of the tribes of southern Morocco.Morocco Desert Trips
